The benefits of writing
Technology is evolving and many of the things we used to do are either ceasing to exist altogether or changing form and are now done in another, easier and more automated, way. However, we must not forget that technology is just a tool for us and our convenience and not a cure-all. Some things should not be affected by the “tsunami” of technology, and should keep their form and “soul” intact. One of them is writing.
A lot of research has been done and considerable time has been spent by scientists, psychologists – neurologists, etc., to find out what the benefits of writing really are and how it contributes to the development and good health of our minds.
BENEFITS OF MIND
All the research has shown that writing – including the process of it – has enormous benefits for our minds during childhood and also in our adult life.
MIND IMPROVEMENT
Specifically, in childhood, it seems that the brain “matures” and even functions at an adult level since areas of the brain related to reading, active memory, and language are activated, which significantly develops children’s ability to understand, learn and master certain subjects.
Furthermore, writing contributes significantly to hand-eye coordination.
KEEP BRAIN HEALTHY AND ACTIVE
However, writing is not only important during childhood, but also during our adult life. Initially, it helps us to stay focused, without being distracted by other activities as we are when we are on the computer or mobile phone. When we write down notes, we activate our critical thinking and we only write down what actually matters. Writing helps to keep our brain healthy and to keep it active and “fit” for years to come. It is scientifically proven that writing helps us to understand and assimilate better and faster any new thing we learn.
PSYCHOLOGICAL BENEFITS
Finally, there are significant psychological benefits. Writing down your feelings is known to help you take some weight off your shoulders and, by reading them, you can see the situation from a different perspective. In fact, many psychologists recommend it.
In addition, writing down your goals helps you to implement them in a more targeted way and perhaps even set bigger ones. In general, writing down thoughts, goals, and commitments is like emptying your mind and making room for new, fresh ideas.
