Black Friday
Black Friday… It only appeared in Greece in 2015 and since 2016 it has gained great importance for the country’s retail trade. It is the day when stores offer huge discounts on their products and we, as consumers, are given the opportunity to get what our hearts desire at super low prices. But how did this special Friday come about? Why is it so special? Let’s discover its roots together.
A bad start
Black Friday is the Friday right after Thanksgiving in the United States; the fourth Friday of every November. The origin of the name dates back to the 1960s in Philadelphia. Every year on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, the ‘Army versus Navy’ football game attracted huge crowds and traffic on the streets of the city. Police and sales employees became so fearful the day before the game that they began calling the day “Black Friday.” The influx of travellers overwhelmed the city and caused traffic disasters, congestion at retail stores and an increase in accidents and retail theft.
A great outcome
Over the years, the name “Black Friday” had developed a negative connotation. To reverse this and give it a more positive spin, shopkeepers tried to change the name to “Good Friday”, but the original name had already stuck in people’s minds. By the 1980s, Black Friday had managed to become a fun novelty rather than something to be feared. Ten years later, retailers started running special Black Friday ads and the event evolved into the shopping bonanza we know today.
This year Black Friday falls on November 25th and is expected to once again bring a pleasant chaos to the stores.
